Adverts!

In this weeks lectures the class looked at both the adverting industry and adverts them selves, there sounds, music, and feel. At the start we viewed some work of Julio, and discussed what was there, why it was there and how it was done. The first thing we really though about was the brief giving the client, (in our work it was Julio), what they wanted and who for. I tried to think about the demographic audience of each advert. i.e. if a client ask me to do a piece for a children’s television show about purple monkeys aimed at pre-school age kids, having a sound track that is full of Break Beats and synths, would be total inappropriate, because that style of sound design would not interest most small children and may even scare and upset them. The mood of the moving image must be matched by the sound because Television is one of the largest forms of visual media the image will be the thing people pay most attention to, the sound behind it is used to enhance and even covey the mood. The problem comes in when the Client asks for something that you as the artist finds either musically wrong or when there wish’s are so far away for the current culture and identity of the place. In the monday lecture we also discussed the idea of the american dream (and globalization), often marketing group think that everyone wants the same thing and one stone will hit every bird, This of course is a ridiculous notion. The impression that these weeks lectures gave me was that working in the adverting industry is both interesting and incredibly hard, mainly because there is so much creative work, and very little time to do it all in. Yet I believe if I could deal with the pressure, I would enjoy it. I have had alot of trouble getting the advert i wanted to work. More soon.
